Science Fiction – A New Frontier

New Frontier

I’ve been toying with a new idea lately, and I’m excited to share it with you. For years, I’ve lived comfortably in the world of historical fiction. Old maps, research notes, and the occasional deep dive into obscure details have been part of my daily routine. That isn’t changing. I’ll absolutely continue writing the stories and eras that have shaped my work so far.

But recently, something unexpected has been nudging at me. A spark of a science fiction idea showed up—quiet at first, then increasingly persistent. It began with a few simple “what if?” questions. The kind that linger longer than you expect. Before long, those questions grew into scenes and characters that felt different from anything I’ve written before. Yet they still connect to the themes I care about: people, choices, and the worlds they inhabit.

Science fiction is a genre filled with imagination and the freedom to explore ideas that stretch beyond the boundaries of time and place. The thought of bringing the same focus on human experience that I love in historical fiction into a new setting—one that looks forward instead of back—has been both energizing and a little daunting.

As I take these first steps into unfamiliar creative territory, I’m grateful to have you alongside me. Exploring a new genre feels a little like rearranging the furniture in a room I’ve known for years. Still familiar, but full of new angles and possibilities. Your thoughts, questions, and insights always help shape the path ahead. I’d love to hear what this new direction sparks for you as a reader. What would you be most curious to see in a sci‑fi story told through the lens of a historical‑fiction writer?
